一、more than
1.more than后跟名词或数量词,表示超过,不止是,不仅仅是,即over。
We advertised for pupils last autumn, and got________ 60. [1998上海]

2.more than后跟含有can的从句,常含"否定"含义。例如:
The cold was more than the children could bear. (这样的严寒远非孩子们所能忍受。)
3.more... than...相当于rather than,表示取舍。意为"与其说后者,倒不如说前者","是……而不是……",这时more... than...后跟两个对等成分,more后跟的形容词词尾不变。例如:
This book seems to be more of a dictionary than a grammar book.
He was more frightened than hurt. (与其说他受伤了,倒不如说他受惊不小。)
4.more... than...后跟形容词或副词,表示前者比后者更……。例如:
This park is more beautiful than that one.
5.more... than...后接含有can的从句,也表示"否定"含义。例如:
Edison was always asking more questions than his teacher could answer. (爱迪生总是问一些老师回答不了的问题。)
二、no more than
1.no more than/not any more than/only后跟名词或数词,表示"仅仅,只有"。
His whole school education added up to no more than one year.
He is no more than a puppet. (他只是一个傀儡。)
2.no more... than.../not any more... than...表示前者和后者一样都不……,其作用相当于"neither... nor..."或可改成as...原级形容词或副词的反义词as...。例如:
Jack is no more diligent than John.杰克和约翰谁都不勤奋。
He can not speak French any more than I can.他不会说法语,我也不会。
三、not more than
1.not more than后跟数词,意为"至多,不超过",相当于at (the) most, less than。例如:
