What would a dog say if it could talk? "Stranger", "fight", "walk", "ball" and "play", according to scientists who have developed2 a computer program to translate3 dog barks.
The special program studied more than 6,000 barks from 14 Hungarian sheepdogs in six different situations. In a lot of tests, the scientists from a university in Hungary discovered that a computer could tell when the dog sees a ball, when it fights, or when it meets a stranger. The barks were recorded on tape and then put on a computer. The computer used software4 to study the differences in their barks.
The computer knew the different situations correctly 43% of the time. Although this was not very successful, it was much better than humans.
The computer was not good at knowing whether the dogs were using a "fight" or a "stranger" bark. It was worst at learning the bark that means "play".
The scientists also performed a second test. This time the computer could learn which dog was barking by the sound of its bark.
Scientists also plan to compare the barks of different kinds to discover what they have in common.
