Thanksgiving Day is one of America’s most popular holidays. It is a time to be thankful —thankful for loving parents, thankful for a warm bed to sleep in, and thankful for being able to buy a new skateboard or those special stamps that you collect. When you think of Thanksgiving Day, what comes to mind? Turkey? A day off from school? Holiday shopping? Well, the turkey is one of the most important parts of Thanksgiving Day. It has become the holiday’s symbol, but how much do you really know about turkeys? Let’s take a look at some cool facts.
Turkeys can live in all kinds of places. However, most turkeys are found in forests and grassy areas. The best time to see a turkey is on a warm clear day or when it is raining lightly.
Turkeys’ heads change color when they become excited.
Turkeys can have heart attacks1. Once, when American army planes were flying around, turkeys in that area died suddenly.
Turkeys will drown2 if they look up when it is raining.
Turkeys spend the night in trees. They fly to their houses at around sunset. Turkeys fly to the ground at first light and feed until mid-morning. Feeding restarts in mid-afternoon.
A wild turkey has excellent vision3 and hearing. They can see about 270 degrees around them. This is the main reason why some hunters can’t find them easily. And they’re fast, too! They can run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.
The former4 American president Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey.
